Help please

A parent of a former student of mine just emailed me. She said I popped into her head and she wanted to reach out. She ended the email with her contact information and said she wanted to get together sometime.

I was glad to hear how the child is doing. This is a child who had lots of issues and I think of her often but I don't want to form a personal friendship to her mom. There are issues there too. How do I politely get out of this? Is there a way to do it without hurting her feelings?

Maybe a kind reply wishing her the best? You could mention with the holidays coming youíll be very busy.

No need to build a relationship if you arenít interested.

Ignore the get together request

I would reply thanking her for thinking of you, how kind it was for her to e-mail you, how you are glad her child is doing well and enjoyed the update, hope things continue to go well, etc. but don't address the getting together.

My first thought....

My first thought is that this parent is selling something and wants you to host a party or listen to the sales pitch so that you can begin selling something.

If that's the case, she's barking up the wrong tree! I am usually the last person to buy or want to sell things like that! Yuck!

Iíve probably spent too much time reading about MLMs but that was my first thought too

Thanks for the advice. I thanked her for thinking of me and said some nice (and true) things about her family but didn't address the idea of getting together.

The thought that she would be selling something makes me feel less guilty.

She had a little crush on a male teacher friend of mine, which could also be her motivation. LOL
