Timed testing and kinders

It's nearly the end of the school year here in Aus, which means end of year DIBELS testing. The joys!

My ASD kiddo simply does not 'get' timed testing. Our letter name fluency test today went like this:

Me: Ok, are you ready? Remember to try and read as fast as you can. We have one minute so we're going to try and be quick!

Kid: Yay! I can be really really quick!

Me: Great! Ready, set go! *starts timer*

Kid: G.....R.....A.....Hey look Miss M it's a ladybug *picks up passing ladybeetle*

Me: Ok, out the ladybeetle down. Keep going!

Kid: P.....S.....Miss M, did you know my tooth is wobbly?

Me: Yes, now keep going! What's next?

Kid: Is the tooth fairy real? Thomas says she isn't....

Me: <!--eyebrow--><!--eyebrow--><!--giggle-->

In my experience, that's ALL Kinders. Timed testing is so inappropriate. Makes me crazy. Also, I HATED DIEBELs.

Amen, Zia! Dibels is horrible, and timed testing is ridiculous on every level for primary.

It's the worst. I hate that the data doesn't reflect what all of my students are capable of.

I actually liked DIBELS when I taught 3/4, but it has been a total headache for K. I may as well be giving some kids a pen and paper test for all I can learn from it LOL

Oh my gosh. While not hilarious, reading that was kind of hilarious because I can feel the pain! <!--giggle--> I wish whoever decided that these types of assessments were "appropriate" had to come in and assess a classroom worth of students! LOL
