Response to request for writing center
Someone showed me this, and I loved it! I called it "Fanmail." It is used to practice the friendly letter format. You provide a sample friendly letter with all parts labeled and explained. You also provide an address book filled with various addresses - your home, a few students' addresses, and even fan mail addresses for certain student-friendly celebrities (actors on Nickelodeon shows, singers, etc). Top it off with stationary, colorful writing utencils and decorative items like stickers and stamps, and you'll have students who never want to leave the writing center! (You can also ask for parents to bring in stamps and envelopes so that the letters can be mailed off.)

Another idea
Another letter writing center idea that I found in a magazine, (Mailbox, I think) was to put small stuffed animanls at the center. THen the students choose an animal and write a letter to it, but do not tell what animal they chose. THey have to put clues in to identify the animal. This combines descriptive writing with letter writing.
Example Dear Friend, Your fuzzy mane and long tail are very beautiful. Loud roars scare me sometimes. I hope that I can come visit you in the zoo some day soon. etc. |
