Do you do groups?
What are the focus of your groups and when do you have them?

I used to do a "girl" group. It was middle school girls having friendship issues (bullying, mean girl stuff). It was pretty successful.

I also did a group for elementary aged boys for anger management. It was ok, but slightly less successful :D

I did a group for 1st and 2nd grade boys- friendship was the topic. Successful.

I taught a "gifted" group and it was semi-successful.

I did a few social skills groups for various ages. Successfulness varied.

All of these groups happened at lunch/recess times, so it was hard to actually feel like I was doing a real "group" because we spent time eating and dealing with constraints, and some kids were more reluctant to spend recess in the group, although we tried to make it fun.

I wish I could have had groups at other times, but it's hard to take away from instructional time. I get it. I've taught (like I think we all have?).

Yes, I do do groups. I work in a high school and I'm connected to a SDC room for kids with emotional issues. I meet with a group every week for at least 30 minutes. I love it because I feel like I'm still being a teacher, but it's more focused because the groups are 3-5 kids. I feel like I can really get to know them.

My first two years of being a school psych were hectic, and I didn't have time for anything extra. Last year was calmer, and I offered a group each semester. I offered it to SPED kids first, then 504 kids, then gen ed kids. First semester was a stress management group. I thought it went well. I held it once a week for about 10 weeks. It was during the school day at different times so the kids wouldn't miss the same class over and over. I started with 6 kids, but only 4 came regularly. They seemed to like it and benefit from it. I tried to do one this semester on self-esteem. There was a need, but I didn't get enough permission slips back. <!--eyebrow-->

Second semester was for kids with autism. I worked with my SLP and we came up with some good lessons. We started with 8 kids and about 6 came regularly. When we got their feedback at the end, it sounded like it helped them a little. We plan on doing it again this year in second semester. I used the same weekly format as I mentioned earlier.

I really like groups because I can utilize my teaching background, and I feel like I can reach more kids than individual counseling. It's also more intimate than having a class of 35-30.
