advice needed

Hi everyone

Do you have any suggestions on an after school club for girls in grades 4 and 5. Is there a workbook or something that I can use. I am hoping to instill positive self esteem and develop strategies for reducing anxiety,

I am not a counsellor yet, just in training, finishing up my Master courses and will be starting a practicum in the fall. Appreciate everything.

P.S. was tinkled pink when I saw this board, thank you so much,

Welcome to the board! We're so glad you're here :)

I think that's a great after school club idea! I haven't used a workbook or anything for the girls' groups I've done, but I was just looking at some possibilities. When I googled it, there were a ton of great resources right away! Maybe you've already found them, but I'll put some of the top hits here:

Dove has something for self-esteem (the PDF is here).

I also found this powerpoint, which may give some ideas for your group.

Here is another PDF that offers great ideas.

And a "manual" for creating girls groups.

Here is another link that might be useful.

I'm sure others who have some experience will pipe up with other ideas! Congrats on being close to finishing your coursework! I look forward to your contributions on this board! :)

self-esteem girls group

Welcome Bigfoot! I love the links that GraceKrispy has for you. (I even bookmarked them!)

I work with high school students and find that this series is good for them (there is one for anxiety as well as stress reduction). I suspect that that some of the activities may be too high for your kids, but you might get some ideas from it and you can just tweak it for your kids.

Let us know how it goes. Best of luck!

I have used the book G.I.R.L.S (Girls in Real Life Situations). I ordered it from amazon. It has many topics and activities that canbe used with a girls group.

http://www.amazon.com/Girls-Real-Lif...rls+counseling

They have two books, one for k-5 and one for 6-8. I have used both books.

thanks all so much

I teach in a very low socio economic school where students have tough lives. I appreciate everything you provided me and think it is all great.

I will continue coming to the board and seeing what is happening

Girls on the Run...

I used to work in Denver and many schools used this program to help girls build skills for life.

It's great because you can get teachers to come out and help run the groups 2-3 times a week and it builds a real sense of community. Even if you don't live near one of the big events, you can do a community 5k/1k and get families involved.
