expensive gift

I received a very expensive gift from the parent of a student yesterday. It is so expensive that I am going to give it back to her. Does anyone have an idea of what to say to her? I thought about saying it's too expensive, (I know she can afford it), and I think there is some limit as to the value of gifts we can accept. I don't want to hurt her feelings, but I may have to. I just can't keep it. Help!

First, I'd ask the principal if there is such a rule. If there is, then you have it easy. "I'm sorry, it is against school policy for me to accept such a lavish gift." If there is not a rule, and you still think you need to return it, graciously say "Thank you, I appreciate that I am thought of, but I'd rather you return this and donate to a charity." Maybe she could give that money to the Sandy Ridge Coommunity to help them heal.

Agree

My state of MA has an ethics rule, so we would not be able to accept. it.
