Writing

Do you teach one type of writing at a time and work on it for several weeks before moving on to another type? For example, would you work on narratives for a month or so then move on to opinion writing? Also, do you follow a writing program or do you create your own?

Writing

I follow my reading series and teach whatever writing is in the weekly unit. It is not really any certain writing program, just shared writing, guided writing and independent writing. We do narrative writing in our journals once a week.

Genre Focus

The writing component of our adopted series simply isn't challenging enough. We do focus on a genre for about 2 1/2 months (narrative, informational, opinion) at a time. We received training in Writer's Workshop, and while I've seen other teachers on line love it, I wasn't having much success. My students needed more support to create complete sentences.

Being a Writer + Lucy Calkins On Demand

This is the first year I used Being a Writing. I was quite impressed at how this program helped my students really get the gist of being more independent and following the writing workshop model. It has basic introductory lessons up until about Novemeber, then it begins genre. These introductory lessons were crucial for building a foundation. Some of my teammates skipped these lessons and say they have been struggling with the genre writing. I also use the Lucy Calkins On Demand assessments for each genre, as a pre and then the rubric again for a revised, published post assessment. The only downside was that the program has poetry as a genre instead of opinion writing, so I just mimicked the other units and tweaked it for opinion writing. I would highly recommend these programs. I am impressed with the student growth and my observations have been good.
