writing a friendly letter

Does anyone have any really good books for teaching writing a friendly letter in first grade? I use "Dear Mrs. LaRue, Letters from Obedience School". (I think that's the title). Anyway, I loved how the book showed the format of a friendly letter, and their was a lot of repetition. However, it was kind of hard for my students to understand a lot of what was going on in the book. I guess I'm looking for easier text, but great letter examples. We did read "Click Clack Moo, Cows That Type" the next day, and the students loved it and could understand what was going on. However, the letter/note format was not what I was looking for.
Thanks in advance for any ideas and help.

The Jolly Postman...

by Allan Ahlberg might be helpful. It is full of examples of letters, post cards, etc.

Have you seen

Help Me Mr. Mutt is a great book for reading advice letters. This year I want to have the children write letters and answer them from the point of view of dogs or other animals.

Great Book

I have used Dear Mr. Blueberry -- the kids love it. Probably the biggest hit I have used is I Wanna Iguana. Its all about a boy writing letter back and forth to his mom trying to convince her to let me have an iguana!

The story is hilarious and the kids just loved it!

Meerkat mail by Emily Gravett.
Sunny the Meerkat writes postcards home while he is away.

Dear Greenpeace by Simon James
Emily writes to Greenpeace about the whale in her backyard pool. they write back with information about whales saying it can't be a whale.

Little Wolf's Book of Badness by Ian WhyBrow.
Little wolf has been sent off to his uncle's school to learn how to be bad. It takes him a long time to get there and he writes letters home on the way. it is a junior novel with 126 pages but lots of pictures.

There is also one called Dear Max but I haven't seen it. I think he writes to his grandfather.
