New to 4th!!!!

Hi! This will be my 18th year teaching but my FIRST in 4th grade!! I taught 2nd for 15 years and first grade the last two. I LOVED both, and had no plans to leave first grade but life doesn't always work out the way we want it to soooooo here I am in 4th!!

**I have a reading workshop question that I am hopeful can be discussed. I'm used to teaching in guided reading groups after a mini-lesson. What does reading workshop look like in 4th? We have an hour (which I am thrilled about!).

What do you all do during your RW block?

**Do you have any 4th grade websites that you LOVE?

**Are there any things you can tell me that would make my transition from first grade to 4th grade a successful one?

Thank you all so much!! =)

Welcome to Fourth!

RW can look about the same. My students read independently while I pull groups. We also do rounds of lit circles so they work together discussing novels.

For transition, just think of fourth graders as bigger kids:)
You still need to model, have high expectations, etc.
The good thing is generally speaking they can work independently longer!
Good luck. Keep posting back here. This board doesn't seem to get a lot of action but I try to check in.

4th grade

I have a year 4 this year. Our year is January to December in Australia. It is 30 years since I taught this year group. I have taught 5 in year 1 and 2 and all but 7 children either in year 1 or 2. They are more independent but still need to watched and model all lessons. One of my groups in both maths and language are working at a much lower level. (so I can use some of my previous materials) The biggest thing I have found is being very organized.
One of the best things I have done is 1 minute mental maths in a variety of operations. They mark each others and then graph their results.
Goodluck,
