Part of it is personality. If yours meshes with P, it happens naturally. If you stay upbeat, invite P in to see fun stuff, have good report with parents, and occasionally give P a compliment, it goes a long way.

I have only seen friends of Ps and friends of friends of Ps be favorites. Don't try to be a favorite. Do your job and and don't compromise your beliefs in what you know to be good practices in the classroom.

Also... Don't get involved in any unnecessary drama at school. Help out newbies and those with tech-phobia without being asked. Get along well with and respect others, including the secretary, custodian, lunch people, etc. Offer your help when you know the principal is in a bind (I stayed late and closed up the school once when the principal's daughter broke her arm).

On the idea of fun stuff, I had my first graders write letters to the principal, sing songs and read stories to her, among other things. She loved it!

I never knew any of my principals before they took the position or I moved to their school. My district usually hires principals that are new to the school or district. Less chance of previous friends.

I think doing your job well, respecting others, and avoiding drama are things almost any principal would appreciate. If you're not the principal's favorite, at least you will know you're doing your job well and treating others well.

For many years I was the favorite because I stayed below the radar. The P flat out told me that I do my job well and then go home, thus she loved me for not causing her grief. Once I asked about a specific item I wanted for my classroom. It was over three hundred dollars. She had ordered it for me within half an hour of my asking. Then she sent me an email stating it was ordered and well deserved as I had never asked for one thing in four years. So, maybe being under the radar can be good.

Difficult to answer but...
When my principal passed away, the district hired a much younger woman. I noticed right away that she gravitated towards, and valued the opinion of, staff members closer to her age. She also developed favorites among those who could enhance her position, hence two teachers who were very good with technology became high on her list. They would put together her presentations, for example. And of course, with a staff of younger teachers overall, she had no shortage of volunteers to do things to make the school (and her by reflection) look good.

I was a teacher who was quiet and flew under the radar. She never seemed to value my thoughts, despite my many years in the classroom. I noticed that while other people at my grade level got opportunities, she passed me over for things that my grade level wanted me to do, such as serve as the classroom to be observed by the writing consultant, choosing instead the teacher she felt was the superstar of the grade. I eventually stopped trying to enter the game, knowing full-well that nothing I did would make a difference. I think you should just be yourself. Volunteer for those opportunities that interest you, be a good team player, and enjoy your own students.

What I did discover was that many times, being under the radar made my life easier, even if not as much was expected of me in her eyes.

I'm not a kiss up. I do have a strong personality. I've been loved and hated. My current principal doesn't like me and I don't like him either. We did like each other when we were coworkers over a decade ago.
