First Day of Social Studies

Hi. I am looking for some good first day activities for Social Studies. I don't want generic back to school activities - I really want to do something that is specifically for Social Studies (maybe even related to Ancient Civilizations, since that is what we will be learning). I'm sorry if this has already been discussed...I know there are alot of first day posts, but I didn't see any that were specifically for Social Studies. I teach 6th grade. Thank you!

I teach 7th and we focus mainly on US History, but I start my year with a Prezi slideshow about What is history, why do we study it, and where do we see eveidence of connections to historical events in every day life, pop culture, etc? I carry the them of "Social Studies is everywhere" throughout the year. I linked to it here: http://prezi.com/pelphc2gkngk/what-is-social-studies/

Last year, I started the first day with having the kids brainstorm a huge list of words in small groups, "whatever came to your mind when I said Social Studies."

Then, each group shared their words, and whenever another group had the same word, I added them to a "master list" that I posted on the board.

Then, each kid picked a word off the master list, designed a"bumper sticker" of the word with illustration and wrote a paragraph on the back explaining why that word was crucial to the study of Social Studies. they came up with great words: Geography, maps, history, the past, stories, connections, latitude, economics, etc...

I put them on display under the banner "Social Studies is..." and remind them all year that Social studies is way more than just "stuff that happened..."

A read-aloud

I read Weslandia by Paul Fleischman to my ancient civ students (6th grade) and they love it. While I read, they write down all of the elements of a civilization as they hear them, and afterwards we discuss them all. As we do that I briefly preview the different civilizations we'll learn about this year. For some reason the kids really connect with this picture book.
This wasn't my idea...I picked it up somewhere but don't remember where--might have been here on PT.

Thank you for the ideas!

social studies first day

mrsb12247, I'm really impressed w/your prezis! Would like to do these, too, but am very intimidated by the tech involved. I have a prezi account, but not sure how to put pictures, videos, etc. Yours is very professional. I tried one and it looked pretty much 3rd-gradery. I teach 6 (Ancient World), 7 (US Constitution-Reconstruction), and 8 (post-Recon. to present). Do you have any advice for me on how I can make prezis that look good, contain great info, and are appealing for MS kids? I would appreciate any help!! If it is OK, I am going to use yours for the first day.

Thank you!
