The Best Part of Me
Hello everyone!
I was wondering if anyone has taught a lesson using the book "The Best Part of Me," and if you have would you mind sharing your lessons???

Oh I'd forgotten I'd done a lesson on this! Okay I'm totally going to have to redo it this year. I'm glad you reminded me of it. Mine wasn't complicated.
I have a friend who is a photographer who mentioned the book so I did a simpler version of it. At the time I taught second.
I read them The Most Important Book and they interviewed a friend in the class and wrote about what they felt was the most important quality of the other person. Then I asked them to think about what they valued about themselves. Were they good at soccer? Funny? Kind? Intelligent. Then we thought about which body part we might associate with that quality---like a foot for soccer or a tongue for telling jokes. They wrote about how that body part as a way of illustrating a quality they valued about themselves. Then I took a picture of that body part, slapped it onto their writing and put it up in the hallway.

The Best Part of Me
Hi bernard1,
I read the book over a few sessions, highlighting particular parts of the text & language with my class.
The kids decided what to write about and worked on sensory poems in response.
I photographed each student and provided a black and white photo for the project.
This is a project & text that I'd use again.
Hope you enjoy it!

I will be new to 5th grade next year. I think your idea would make an excellent way to start the year. I might even tie it into some research on body systems.

How do you take a black and white photo like those in the book?

best part of me
I love teaching with this book. We usually begin by reading 4 good poems from the book, and the question that students answer is what makes this poetry. We chart a list including things like comparisons, sense(imagery), purposeful repetition
description, meaning, theme, showing of feelings... Then we make another chart types of detail to include in poems that contains things like: why is body part important to you, what would life be like without it, describe it 6 ways, f you could talk to it what would you say, what would it say to you, likes, dislikes...Then students choose one part of there body and brainstorm, writing all the details they can thing of in a give time. Finally we look at poem examples one last time to notice how poems are organize: how did the writing create a sense of beginning, end, begin lines, achieve rhythm, order details.. Then student organize details into poem lines and group (usually one stanza). This is followed by peer editing and revision before posting. They make a great open house share.
