Science grade weights?
My teammates use the following weights for math and ELA.
Daily: 50%
Tests/Quizzes: 40%
Homework: 10%

This is my 2nd year in 5th grade, teaching science and I am thinking about putting labs as a separate category. I'm embarrassed to say I think I did that last year, but cannot recall how I distributed the weight.<!--eyebrow-->

Daily: 40%
Test/Quizzes: 40%
Labs Participation: 10%
Homework: 10%

My thought is that they may get a grade for the lab sheet or output , but I need some way to document participation in the labs, but I don't want to sugar coat their grades. Thoughts or suggestions?

Looks fair to me. It is interesting that students who participate, follow directions, engage in discussions, treat materials in a safe and respectful way and turn in lab reports will probably also be the ones who do well with daily work. I don't think it would sugar coat grades if the lab grades were placed on a 10 point scale to reflect the difference between excellent work and just so-so work.

Do you give much homework? Our 5th grade Science teacher has her weights at:
Daily: 40%
Test/Quiz: 50%
Labs: 10%
But if they have homework, it's usually because they didn't get the daily work done in class.

Last year I gave one short homework each week as a review of the concept--usually a reading passage with some simple questions about the homework. Thank you for your reply. That gives me something to consider.

Thank you for taking the time to reflect on my question and reply. You are most likely right about the students who are conscientious. :)
