Cal Fires: Book suggestions for dazed students

Hello,
I am a teacher impacted by the recent firestorm in California. My students are in a daze. Some have lost their homes. I am looking for your suggestions of books or lessons or websites or any resources that you feel might be helpful during this very surreal time. These kids, as you know, will remember this event. I also know it can be, after the daze lifts, a powerful time to learn about resilience, unity, community, etc. So many beautiful things can spring from this awful, horrendous tragedy. We are grateful that is was not worse but geez, it is bad here. OK thank you fellow teachers! You all rock!<!--falloakleaves--> I found a dear little book from Mo Williams about waiting....it is in my car ...I forget the name...but that will be a hopeful little read aloud with many ways to make connections. Also the book about the Crayons being upset (sorry forgot the name of the book...it is hilarious and I think humor will be most helpful with the 8 year olds now also....planning to keep it light at first then work in valuable lessons about resiliency etc) THANK YOU!

A Chair For My Mother

1 Attachment(s)
might be a good picture book read aloud. The family experiences a fire and loses all the contents of their home. This is told briefly and with no graphic details as the story focuses on their recovery.

Their community pitches in and gives them used items from their own homes so they can set up household again. They still want a comfortable upholstered chair so they save the mother's tips in a jar until they have enough to buy the chair they want.

It is a great little story about misfortune, community help and saving for something you want.

It is by Vera Williams.

I would also read them Double Trouble in Walla Walla by Andrew Clements because it is pure fantasy and word choice fun. It is about a girl who gets a virus of some sort where she talks crazy. Then her teacher gets it as well and so on. She uses crazy phrases like "yabba, dabba, doo", "hokey pokey" and "hunky dory".

It takes a little practice to read this one fluently aloud but the kids always love it! Then they can read it as well with the attached copy of a reader's theater. This fun lesson will put smiles back on their faces.

Hope both of these suggestions are helpful.

Resiliency

Thank You, Mr Falker is a great story of resiliency. It is by Patricia Palocco. It is a longer well developed picture book about a young girl who can't wait to learn to read.Unfortunately she has great difficulty learning. Fellow students begin to make fun of her in class because she can not read well. Then in fifth grade she gets a teacher who realizes she is dyslexic. He helps her one on one until she can read more fluently. The best part of the story is at the end when you are told the young girl is the author of the book. :) She grew up to be a prolific children's author! She never gave up learning to be a good reader.

It would make a great introduction to her many picture books if you think your students can handle them. They are more challenging than your average picture books but she and her books makes a great author study.

The Trouble With Tuck is a short novel about a dog who goes blind. But Tuck does not let this disability stop him. He is a very resilient dog. This would be an inspiring story to share in reading or as a read aloud.
