Holiday activity
Our last day before break... Gosh, I hate the day. I don't like big parties. I don't want to supervise a class full of kids eating too much junk food, and playing party games. I do want to do something fun and different and I would like it to have meaning. Any interesting ideas?

I have done some building challenges in the past. I could do something like have them design a new sleigh that holds the most pennies or something like that... But I am looking for ideas. I have about 2 hours in the afternoon. Anyone?

I would do something about
:DSnowflake Bentley. I would start reading the book the day before or earlier as it is a long nonfiction picture book. Then after completing the story I would have a snowflake related art activity. There are many ideas on Pinterest. I like the ones that have kids do something related to the fact that each snowflake is symmetrical.

There is a film with the same name. It was made in 2003. It is only 16 minutes long. This would be nice to show perhaps.

If you bundled white pairs of socks into balls you could go outdoors and have a snowball fight. It would be crazy but the students would love it! It is something they would remember forever. Or you could just end the day with the stem activity.

I would have a collection of snow related picture books to read and share with one another on the rug if they complete the snowflake early or some other extension activity to keep them busy.

Maybe you can find some environmental music with the falling snow theme to play while working on the project to set a calm tone. Not a snow storm by all means.<!--eyebrow-->LOLLOL

Thank you for all the ideas. I haven't decided yet, but there are several of those links that look promising.

I think I am going to do a challenge where they build with toothpicks and gumdrops and call it Santa's sleigh. Design a new sleigh that holds all the presents... and use a text book to see how strong they can build the sleigh. I thought about paper and tape, but we might not have enough time for that.

Sounds great to me
They will have lots of fun with that project. I would get some wipes to use at each table group as their fingers will get very sticky.

I would purchase colored toothpicks to be more festive.

You might buy the wooden things that look like tooth picks. They are used for shish kabobs. That length may help with the project. You could limit how many each team gets.

I would unwrap the gum drops a few hours ahead of time so they kids will be less tempted to eat them as they will dry out some.

I would cover desks with poster paper from rolls or use old newspapers to help make clean up easier.

Good luck!

I bought some glyph activities on TpT. The kids love doing them. They’re engaging and I don’t have to do anything. One of them has a writing component so we that as well.

I did a write your Twas the Night Before Christmas activity for my students from Teacher Pay Teacher. I read or just showed them several knock offs of the poem. I think I even used a few youtube videos. Then I had the kids do the fill activity in groups. Then they performed them. We had a lot of fun with it.
