Unfocused students

...I don't think it's my lessons as they are enjoying the "fun" stuff. But sometimes we have to just do pen and pencil work--Daily Oral Language, Writer's Workshop, Math. They notice flies going...

The formalities

I call them "ladies & gentlemen." I fancy that this will inspire them to behave politely and kindly.

I just came on to post a question about using one iPad in the 4th grade classroom. I'm thinking of getting one, but was unsure how I could use it.

Any great ideas for open house? We'll have our California missions out, posters about the state symbols, figurative language art, other art, # of books read and perhaps a latest essay.

This is it!

Oh perfect--a wading pool will do the trick.

The students are also writing the title of each book that they have read and we are putting it on a 3X5 card.

Thank you!

Thanks for all opinions

I think that I'll stick to no hats/hoods--although it is a constant battle. But I do have to agree with the people who apply the rule equally to boys and girls...I think it is the only way to be...

Hats in class

What are your policies about hats in class? I always make sure to have girls take off hats as well as boys, even cute knitted caps (which boys also wear). I also don't allow hoods, but some of...

One small change

I love this and plan to use it. I think that I will have students write their names/initials on the rock and they will go into my random call-on basket. Then when I need someone at random I'll draw...

Read, read, read

After reading The Book Whisperer last year I implemented a new "what to do when you finish" rule. Read. That was the only option. You finish what you're doing and you get a book out and read. It...

morning v. afternoon L.A.

I have a question-- is there a particular reason for preferring morning L.A. over afternoon?
I've been thinking of switching mine and wondered.

My schedule is generally

Okay, definitely getting Notebook Know-How. I think I'll get the Regie Routman as well.
