do you mean positive and negative?

I teach my 6th graders this way:

First you have to make the problem an addition problem by changing the minus to a plus and changing the sign of the last number. For example, 5-6 now becomes 5+...

I (and my 6th graders) really love partial quotients division. My kids call it "hangman" because that's what it looks like! I've got examples and an explanation I wrote out for someone else awhile...
