Read this book!

I have read The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles, by Julie Edwards (Julie Andrews!) to my class every year I've taught 3rd grade. It's an amazing book! And... I'm not sure it will ever be made...

pre-Valentine's Day activity

We make valentines for service people overseas, so we make them about a month before so we know they'll get there in time. It's not too hard to find someone with a contact.
We also make them to be...

When I first started teaching, we wrote/developed just about everything. It took a lot of energy, but curriculum development was never boring! Now I find that we have programs for everything: math,...

You know how we try to differentiate with our students. PD is rarely differentiated!
A lot of our PD in our district now takes place on line. So you have to respond on line with something entirely...

what everyone else said!

Give it enough time. Give it more than enough time at the beginning of the year. The end of the day is when the unexpected things happen- kids that are dismissed early without prior notice, etc....

Agency

Best explanation I heard was that a "non-agentive" child is still asking where the pencil sharpener is in March. Agentive- don't you love it? I dislike "through the lens of", too!

Morning meeting

I include "riddle of the day." During end of the day jobs, my meeting helper chooses a riddle that he/she can explain, and checks with me about it. Then the helper gets to tell it at the end of...

Read alouds

Love to read The Teacher From The Black Lagoon at some point after lunch the first day, when kids have a better idea about third grade, the classroom, their fellow student, and me. It's great for a...

end of the year

I totally agree with the PP. I try to keep up to a regular predictable schedule as much as possible, but add in some special surprises here and there. It might be math, but it's a math project. It...

Thanks...

Thanks, everyone. Amiga13, you and I are in total agreement re: what we're doing and the "phase" of our work history. This is my 25th year. There are things that I wish I could do, things that I've...

can't do it all

First time venting...
I've been crying on my way home from school lately. Many reasons- a total change in school culture, put into place by the P. who has his own vision, disregarding the backbone...

Well, you can't! You can do your darndest to try, though. Need to remember that they're kids... and you're only human, too.

open seating

Love the Brain Bar idea!
I've had my class of third graders choose their own seats every day and throughout the day for several years now, and it's been quite successful. It's a great lesson in...

Third grade

I love this age, as well as the third grade curriculum. I love how they mature throughout the year. I love how they don't understand riddles in September, and then are experts at telling them as well...

It's up to the teachers in my school re: birthday treats, and some do them, some do them at the end of the year, and some don't do them. Nice to have that teacher control. We recently did away with ...

wondering the same thing

We've only received 14 or 15 cards, out of 30 something... maybe we're on the same exchange? Did you get a card from MA? Send a PM to me if you did.
I'm wondering if deadlines for these shouldn't be...

I mark off an area next to the sink with painter's tape- and that's where the bottles stay, unless it's snack time. That's the only time they can be at student tables. I try to send all bottles home...
