Promotion and Social Distancing

Our school has always marked the end of fifth grade by having a promotion celebration. We did a ceremony with friends and family members present, sort of like a kidís version of commencement. Then...

Lucy's teacher manuals are long winded and overwhelming. My first year, my coach recommended focusing on the teaching point, posters/anchor charts and the share. then we worked on conferencing. still...

Tracking Books Read

I'm interested to hear from others about whether and how you track the books kids read all year. I use reader's workshop and I typically have a book log for kids but I'm looking for something more...

Be You!

I've taught 3, 4, 5 and I've always had better years when I stopped trying to be other teachers. I don't do too much "decorating" before the year starts. My philosophy runs toward letting the class...

Please, let's start a board here for teachers in portable classrooms. Here's a starter topic:

They didn't give me desks, just tables, so what do I do with students' stuff?

Our P does this too. She always "schedules" a staff meeting for the same time our open house is supposed to end. We have to all gather in the library.

I have a new Principal and V.P. This year. Our former were promoted because they are just that amazing. We have a Leadership Team that consists of one representative from each grade level and area,...

Paras are Awesome!

I was a ParaPro for 9 years before I earned my teaching credentials. I know what it's like to work as an aide, and now I know what it's like to work WITH aides. I just want to put it out there that...

Awesome!

I would love this. Boys are generally very straight forward. I'd be concerned for the girls, since there are so few. Cliques happen.

Get the book, Yardsticks. Helps a lot with understanding...

Should work in a 90% poverty school with kids in trauma. Love is needed there, plus a million over skills.

And I do feel so much better. I taught summer school with an incoming group of fifth graders, some of whom are in my class next year, although they did not know it. What a wonderful group of little...

For the advice. Routines is a spot that I've already identified as needing a brush up, so a good reminder. And I do have an out of town vacay coming up. I just want to be in love with it again....

Essential

I'd say that community building is essential! I do work at what you might call an urban school; we have more than a dozen languages spoken here and a 85% free and reduced lunch rate. Our school...
