I'd recommend the daily 5 book. It's a wonderful frame work for literacy and writing time. In addition the suggestions about setting up and teaching routines applies to other subjects as well.

I absolutely agree that it's building relationships with the students. I'm a retired first grade teacher so I can only speak to teachers of young students.

After 34 years in first grade I'd say the biggest thing that made the difference in getting kids to LOVE reading and get to end of year grade level was implementing Daily 5 in my classroom.
