Love middle school
Good suggestions. I only sub middle/high school. When kids are talking or ignoring me, I stop, fold my arms, and silently wait. 20 years of middle school teaching. I stare at the offenders. It takes...

No cafeteria duty.
I sub middle and high school. They aren’t extending the day. Now it’s 8:00-1:00. Students get a snack. They also have sack lunches to take home if they want. Teachers meet remotely with small groups...

District going back March 1
Rumor has it that they will offer full time in school classes beginning March 1. Remote will still be available. I’m due next week for my second shot. Still leery of going into the full classrooms...

Tips on subbing highschool?

Lots of good advice
I only sub high school and middle school. During COVID, it’s more like babysitting. The only problems I have had are when students I don’t know try to get away with stuff. Generally, though, what...

Let me add
I have had teachers email me their plans and even PowerPoint presentations. Those are teachers I know well from subbing or from before retirement. That way, I am able to have one in case I can’t get...

Covid and emailing
1. As a retired teacher, I would not respond to an anonymous email. Never. It might be a parent, a student, or just a person who wants to make trouble.
2. Go to the school or district website. It...

Welcome to the club!
Spent most of my career in 8th grade and two years in 7th grade. It was truly an adventure. And I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

My experiences
At the beginning of the year, except for p.e., I basically was there to watch the kids in person. They would do assignments posted on the classroom, and I did nothing online. P.E. Was different. I...

What was I thinking? Haven’t worked since before Thanksgiving, when schools went full remote. They are still full remote until the 19th. I can do Google meets and zoom. Hope the teacher has all set...

I had a 7/7 and took two nighttime Aleves an hour later. Not as impressive as your deed, though.

Didn’t think of that.
I have my teacher certification, but it’s for retired teachers. I have a really old teacher ID. Maybe the district will issue a letter saying that we are sub teachers. Good question to ask when...

I saw those.
I usually set mine in the sink if it’s clean. Otherwise, I have a plastic cutting board that doubles as a lid holder.

FREE sub app coming!

I think you need a code.
I was emailed a code from my district office. I still have Jobulator, because it keeps me logged in. I used the frontline app once, and lost a job because of the few seconds it took to sign in.

I’m not sure I’ll get unemployment
But I will apply. It’s due to Covid, and I did qualify last spring until I began subbing this fall. I don’t get a lot, but everything helps.

This sounds like nothing I’ve experienced as a sub with in-person Learner’s. Yes, students are on screens. But teachers, if the weather is good, have been teaching outside. One teacher uses an alcove...

8th grade boys
Brains go south. However, about sophomore year, it seems as if something clicks, and they care about others. I’ve subbed in a civics class several times, and the conversations are very enlightening.

Full remote one more week at least
Rural district. Bus driver tested positive. Now the entire transportation department is quarantined. And the students on that bus. So, I get a week off. Again.
