I use Fox by Margaret Wild. It's about a bird and dog who are friends. The fox is jealous and steals the bird away only to abandon her in the desert so she knows what it feels like to be alone....

Tests
I wimped out on tests. I do Reading Workshop, but one day a week I do the story from my sixth grade anthology as a read aloud and give the students the selection test as an open book test immediately...
