Do you want a life?

I taught a long time. Never had a phone in my classroom. If I had to contact a parent I used an office phone or sent a note.
The one time I did use my cell phone was to contact some parents about...

Gen Ed vs SPED

For eight years I had a demonic, demented principal like yours. I was the campus dyslexia teacher. (Even though I never Id'd or taught a dyslexia student.) The year before my forced retirement my...

Campus Security

This post is directed to all school employees not just subs.
Yesterday I took a group of students out for recess by myself. While the students were playing a stranger, (at least to me), walked...

Car Rider Duty Continued

Sometimes during car rider duty I pretend that I'm an airline boarding agent.
"Welcome to Cone One. I will be your boarding agent this afternoon. We hope to have you safely on board and headed to...

Neither Fish nor Fowl

You are absolutely right. One of the hardest parts about being a sub is that you miss the kids, but you also miss the camaraderie and teamwork of your former colleagues.

My school district very...

Same Here

My state will allow me to sub all year as long as the assignments are of a short duration.

I would be more than willing to return to work as a para at first year's salary, if I could keep my...

40% or more.

That's one of the reasons why I loved my years as a P-K teacher. My students and I shared the same maturity level and attention span.

During car rider Duty

One day during car rider duty, I felt this little tug on my pants leg. This tiny little pre-schooler looked up at me and said, "I love scented markers. Do you love scented markers? I would like to be...

Paras-Best Friends a Sub Will Ever Have

One of the reasons I love taking SN classes are the paras. The secret is to go into the room knowing that the teacher and lead para have already discussed the day. Really great paras are also great...

Long Terms and Middle School

You certainly gained my respect! I taught middle school for 22 years. After 32 years I retired and started subbing.
My state doesn't allow retired teachers to take long term jobs.
My favorite...

Something sounds funny about your situation. If you are not a member of a union, see if they will let you back pay your dues. Then the union should be able to provide you with legal help. (Dues are a...

A couple of little tricks.

Can you be at all dramatic? I discovered a long time ago when I was a full-time 'teacher' my days went easier if I could turn assignments into games or magic or make believe.
1. So with the little...

Yes Texas is always getting itself into trouble. Even makes the news in my state.
I think that one of the reasons that more children are being identified with learning difficulties is because of...

Did anyone bother to talk to the subs about the shortage? I can deal with just about anything a school throws at me; except schoolwide disrespect. Especially from teachers who weren't even born when...

Forced Out Heartbroken

I'm so glad to read all of the wonderful stories about teachers who have retired and found other meaningful life objectives.
However there is always another side to a story. I would like to share...

I agree with you SubMan. I would like to add some other things good subs should do if they want to be invited back.

1. Accept class changes with a smile.

2. At the end of the day make sure...

defense of subs

Your answer is right to the point. It is sad that so many educators fail to recognize that subs should be treated with respect and professionalism.

After reading this original post and reading subsequent responsiveness, I sense perhaps a shade of unintended lack of empathy toward the sub. from the original poster. (I'd be willing to bet that...

We subs are expected to leave feedback for the teachers.
Aesop should develop a substitute feedback form for teachers.
I think that blocking a sub without providing some form of feedback is the...

Restroom Access

Yes... back in the good old days when I was a 'real teacher' our bathrooms were locked also. Subs were not given either room keys or bathroom keys.
But things do change when you're just a sub. ...

I think that the real reason subs aren't given keys to the restroom is because they believe that we'll steal all the toilet paper! :)
