Constitution Day--What do you do?

Constitution
I try to read a book about the Constitution and then we write a class constitution. I have the entire class sign it and hang it up. This year Scholastic News also has a weekly magazine about it!

I have taught first grade for 13 years
and yes, they are very talkative. Each year it seems they get more talkative. This year does seem tougher than usual...but I think part of that is just my stress level after having a difficult...

What I use
I use the book....and the cards are in the back of the book in black and white..so I colored them and use those. I have a smartboard now..so I am making a notebook for phonics dance but I still use...

I use Phonics Dance
and I love it. But I just looked up Jolly Phonics and it has a follow up for the year after K.....called Jolly Grammar....you might want to check into that....it would reinforce what they had last...

I got rid of mine
I had my SmartBoard for the first year this year....and I got rid of my overhead - I didn't miss it. I just felt it would take up too much space.

But it is VERY BUSY. You have to remember that they are only 6 years old at the beginning of the year....they are not very independent - most won't be reading much, not used to doing too much on...

I love my smartboard! We go to web sites and play tons of games. I also use it for math, calendar time, morning meeting.....there is so much you can do....send me a PM if you would like..we can...

My thought is that the earlier you start internvention the better chance the child has for success in later grades. The longer you wait the more ingrained the child becomes in bad reading habits...

I've had both
I loved tables - except that there was no storage, the kids were too close together, and seperating them was a major hassle. Now I have desks...they take up less room and I can move a kid right away...

low ORF Dibels scores....help!

DIBELS testing
For ORF testing you are supposed to do 3 passages and you take the middle score. If your principal hasn't been trained in DIBELS testing, I am sorry...but she really shouldn't be doing the testing. ...

First, why in the world is the principal giving the test?? I would think that would be a problem right there....most kids are afraid of "going to the principals office" so that is adding stress. ...
