Retirement on the horizon

Well, I'm turning 60 next birthday so I read this post with interest. I haven't determined a date to retire yet, but I know it will no doubt be sometime in the next ten years. A good teacher...

I give out mine in my class handbook

In fact, I think the school may even list teacher numbers. (Although I imagine if we asked them not to, they wouldn't.) I encourage parents to contact me if they have a question. We are a small...

This reminds me...

when I first started teaching I had a shy child named Deibert who wouldn't talk for the first six weeks of school. (True story--not one word!) I guess either his parents didn't write too clearly...

I agree!

Since I wrote one of the quotes (about leadership ability) the pp "dinged" I went back to reread what I'd written and it did sound bad the way I stated it! I apologize! What I was trying to say...

Concentrate on the ones who are doing right!

I know that's easier said than done, but it sounds like you have a pretty good class overall. It doesn't sound like either one of these youngsters have leadership qualities so I wouldn't worry about...

Teacher workload

Having taught at least one class in every grade at some time in my 30+ years, I agree that the workload isn't less in the primary grades, just different. Each grade has its own opportunities and...

Give it a go...

In some ways, I'm not the best one to help since I was always very close to my dad and I felt like we had a great relationship. Yet having lost him to cancer 15 years ago, I would give anything for...

A little hurt, but also relieved

I would feel sad because of the way the principal put things, but relieved that I was just teaching one grade. I've done both, and combo classes are definitely more work. Sounds like maybe it...

Selling teaching materials

I'm still several years until retirement, but the amount of teaching materials I have accumulated in my 30+ years is growing rapidly and I think it's time I start whittling down. Can someone direct...

Sign of the Beaver

I teach grades 3-5 and try to correlate the books we read together with our history curriculum. My 5th graders still fondly remember Sign of the Beaver that we read when they were in 3rd. (It was...

Grades

I get frustrated about this every now and then, too, particularly in PE. I imagine it's harder to grade these subjects, but frankly if I'm hearing the students are misbehaving/not listening many...

Bad Policy

The short answer to your question--no! You are not out of line for wanting this new procedure dropped. When kids need to go, they need to go!

I believe kids should take their recess and...

Love it!

I've taught many years and never thought of doing this--what a great idea to encourage carefulness and accuracy!!! I'm afraid too many of mine get rewarded by "speeding through." Thanks for the...

Two things I've tried...

in the past. One is kind of like the "tattle sheet." All tattling had to be done in writing. What was done and to whom? That cut down a lot and also kept a record. (Both to see who was...

No big deal at our school

Teachers at our school try to look professional and neatly dressed all the time. If we have an outdoor field trip or Sports Day--we usually all wear jeans. It's not really an issue. Our...

I'm confused!

I get that it's not o.k. to be a bystander and passively watch someone else bully another child, but it sounds like this child responded in an age-appropriate manner by telling a responsible adult. ...

Points

Our gym teacher gives them points (1-5) each day. When they get so many times they earn a free day.

Silence

For me, the thing that works best is just being silent and waiting for them to quiet down. That gets my group quieter and attentive sooner than anything else. If they are busy doing projects that...

Asked this on Busy Board a week ago--no response. So I'm going to try here. What does it take to start a blog here on Pro Teacher?

Starting a blog on Pro Teacher

One of my goals this year is to start a blog and I though since it would be (mostly) about teaching, that Pro Teacher would be the perfect forum. Can anyone give me any help on how exactly I would...

Modern Curriculum Press

We used this when I taught just third grade. It's not "flashy" but has a lot of good drill. I used ABeka when I taught first along with MCP and those kids could sound out just about anything.

Walking down the hallway

My kids can earn an extra minute of recess if they walk down silently in a straight line. Incentives seem to work better than threats with most kids although we have "tried again" more than once...

I'm with you!

I'm sure it's not easy to sub either, but it also disturbs me when I make the sub notes so plain and they aren't followed. It makes me wonder--Why bother????
