Talk to the principal

Like others posted, talk to the principal and explain your rough situation.

I've tried long term assignments in the past and was not a fan. Too much pressure and abuse for not much pay. It's...

What some schools don't realize about subs (Jr/Sr high)

I feel like I've encountered this problem for years in Jr/Sr high. And for some reason it happens most when I take the dreaded half day afternoon assignments, diving directly into chaos and...

Did you call your sub agency?

Call your sub agency and let them know you made a mistake. Ask them to call the school and explain the mix up. Accidents happen.

If you don't have a sub agency, maybe email an apology letter to...

Looks like jobs showed up

Looks like several jobs showed up for Jr/Sr high school. Finally. Tomorrow is the first day where I am.

Good luck all, and thanks for sharing all your personal stories.

Good idea with the business cards with contact information.

Have considered doing that before in schools where I enjoyed working with the students and other teachers.

My post was actually meant for lakeside, not subman. Whoops.

I don't have jobs. Lol.

You're in the same boat as me.

I'm actually attending a training workshop on Labor Day.

Looking forward to it because I could use some mental preparation and pointers for the year.

Wow, you're in high demand.

I'm not requested often, but when I am it's usually for jobs I'm not too excited for... AKA elementary, Phys. ed, or classes with high behaviors.

Sounds like you all had numerous jobs available. Wow.

Granted, you have a much earlier start of the school year than I.

Hopefully I get an assignment that isn't kindergarten... Not my thing!

My goodness, that's an early school year.

Must be a delight dripping with sweat all over the lesson plans. You guys are troopers.

Like they say, "Don't mess with Texas."

Anyone get any assignments yet?

I've seen nothing on Aesop yet. Anyone snag a job yet?

Hopefully something comes along soon.

Schools start Sept 6th around where I live.

Thanks for tips

Good ideas here.

My only disagreement is that subs can "be prepared" for situations like this.

Some schools do not want students doing work irrelevant to the curriculum or not approved by...

No plans, so now what?

So far today I've talked to four different people and no one can help me find plans. The main office have no suggestions and neither does the teacher next door.

No emergency plans left either. ...

They treat us like the children sometimes

That's ridiculous.

You were literally looking at plans you needed for your job for the day.

I wouldn't go back to that school if they're going to treat you like you're one of the students.

Just to be clear...

I posted my original post to simply point out how these behaviors are slightly annoying, yet so very predictable it makes me laugh. Middle schoolers will never change. They're like clockwork. It's a...

Middle schoolers do this every time.

Student: "Can I go to my locker to get my pen?"

Me: "I have extras right here."

Student: "I want my own though. Student XYZ broke my best pen."

Me: "Fine. (Sigh...) Be quick."

I've never bothered emailing

How frustrating.

I don't bother contacting a teacher unless I encounter a situation that could be a serious liability for a student or myself. Even then I'm vague.

Simple bad behavior I...

Whenever I hear those "warnings" I cringe and groan, hating life. But they usually aren't as bad as they sound. I find the worst classes are the ones you find out about on your own.

I greatly...

regarding cell phones in class

I don't think it's fair that subs are supposed to be phone police. If schools allow them in the first place, good luck telling the kids to hand them in to you as a sub. You will be met with fierce...

Schools repoen tomorrow but no jobs yet

I've been checking Aesop all day and it's only been TA positions for tomorrow.

Not really in the mood to be a TA.

Hopefully jobs pick up in a day or two.

Bait and switch

Good point. The bait and switch kills me too. If I sign up for 8th grade, it does not mean I'll be able to handle 1st graders.

Two different beasts.

Starting to be pickier about schools I sub at.

Luckily there are a lot of districts in my area. Here are my new requirements for schools I work at. If you do not meet even one of these rules of my criteria, I won't show up to your school.
