Don't even go there
Ignore the "bored" issue and focus on what the kid can work on now. Be prepared with materials that you can give mom. Easy to play games are the best (especially for a "bored" kid). Look up math...

Super fast, easy
Dump the following into your crock pot:
1 Chuck roast
2 cans low sodium cream of mushroom soup
1 can french onion soup
Cook on low at least 8 hours.
Serve roast with gravy over mashed...

I've had them done and thought it was worth it. They did a great job inside and out, especially cleaning the window tracks. I think I paid $120 but that was two years ago.
