How it was explained to me...

The old curriculum covered a lot of information at a superficial level. CC covers fewer standards, but you take kids deeply into each one so that they truly master it before they go on.

Been in your shoes!

I moved to 5th last year from second. I had to make some changes to the D5 choices to work for my kids. I also changed up the CAFE menu to match the 5th grade Common Core (I call it the LIFE board)...

Composition Book

I know you said that you were having the kids bring notebooks. I personally prefer composition books for interactive notebooks...they hold up so much better than spirals.
