I think

About the Authors first. It gives you a format for writing instruction. Wondrous Words is for how to use mentor texts to teach writing. Both are fabulous.

Have you tried reading them mentor texts like How to Lose Your Friends by Nancy Carlson? I like to have the class read my book on How to Make Ants on a Log and then follow the directions. Good luck!

After a vacation, for example,

we talk about how we had a whole watermelon of stories happen. Then, we "crack open" the melon, and think of all of the seeds inside. The challenge for us, as writers, is to focus on one seed, one...

How about

Everyday!

As much as you can read aloud and model your thinking, the more you will teach your students how to do so.

I don't know

what Lucy says. Since we raise caterpillars early in the year, due to our four seasoned weather, I do nonfiction early. When my students write about insects, I give them some choices of lined...

What grade are you teaching?

In second I have been (and am planning for next week's start!) using individual tubs for each group or team (four to five kids sitting in a pod) for the first two or three weeks of school while we...

From a second grade teacher...

I'm not sure what a literary essay is, but the idea of mentor texts is pretty basic. Find books, preferably shorter story books, that demonstrate what you want kids to write. First, study the text...

Yikes!

I am so thankful that I don't have basal requirements for my reading instruction! If there is any way that you can figure it out, that 9:30 to 11 time might work for 45 minutes each of Readers' and...

It's good teaching!

I think as long as you carve out a time every day, if possible, to have a mini lesson (or focus lesson), independent reading time, partner time, and a group share, you should do it!!! Kids love it,...

Yes!

Will your school buy it? I had to buy my set, but it is very worth it. It will provide all of the information and organization that you need.

Totally!

You'll need writing folders, red and green sticker dots, paper (You can copy from the Units' CD), and mentor texts. The books, or others like them, should be in the school or public library. I also...
