I hear you! The year before last I had 29 kinders and soooo many behavior issues. I loved them but they were completely exhausting and it took a toll on my mental health for sure.

Last year I had...

When you don't feel like teaching

I take my kinders outside for a nature walk and to see the cows. (Paddock at the back of the school.) We take clipboards and papers and sketch the trees, clouds or animals. Many kids choose to write...

Unwritten rules

Yelling at a staff member in front of students seems like a much more serious breech of procedure than lining your class up a little differently. <!--eyebrow-->

One of ours is 'don't send your...

Letter/sound revision

I'm not 100% sure how your intervention time works, or what is required, so I can only comment based on my own experience. Personally,I don't think you can help a struggling learner very effectively...

That sounds horrendous. I can't believe you were told not to teach reading to 6 year olds!

Judge Judy

I second and third the Judge Judy idea. I would LOVE to hear her opinion on this <!--giggle-->

I feel sorry for the teacher but sorrier for the kid. Reality will hit hard :(

Whoever is observing you should not be looking for perfect kids or behaviour. They should be looking at how you respond to bad behaviour. If kiddo misbehaves and you manage it well, that should be a...

Not as bad, but the other day one of my kinders brought in an entire deer skull with antlers attached. The antlers were a little chipped which inspired an entire storyduring show and tell about the...

teacher mental health

The best thing my school does for teacher mental health is maintain a positive culture. I worked as a casual (sub) for 3 years and worked at every school in town. At the end of my 3rd year, 3 schools...

Most times when I've had a student like this, they've been Vietnamese or Chinese and have adopted a nickname that is easier for Australians to pronounce. I expect the child to write the name they go...

Fifth grade is definitely too old for that stuff. I hate stopping to deal with bathroom/water stuff so have trained my kids to use sign language to communicate their needs. I nod + off they go. That...

30 minutes recess and no extra play <!--grumpy-->

Sometimes you do need to bend rules to help out someone who is mentally ill. But as with any illness, there should be a medical certificate and evidence of treatment to back it up.

I mean, would...

Christmas gifts

The last two years, my parents have organised a gift certificate and all chipped in for it. It is such a lovely thing for them to do, and I use it to buy toys or art supplies for my classroom, so it...

Manipulative mom

That's really sad :( No wonder the kid doesn't give his best. Mom is the worst kind of manipulator.

I'm glad you felt vindicated though. I can relate to that!

Yes, you can leave if you need to. But maybe you should just make it a temporary leave, to give you time to process + make sure it really is about the job.

So sorry you're experiencing this....

Small group

I think small group teaching is of a higher quality but also means less explicit instruction over all. For my kinders, less is often more, so small group teaching is a big part of what I do. And...

We can use whatever materials we want as long as we are teaching to the syllabus. (I think you would call that the standards in the US).

My school does have particular reading and spelling...

it sucks that you're feeling that way. I'm willing to bet there's at least a couple nice people who feel similarly. Keep an eye out for them.

That colleague can't be too popular!...

I agree with this. I've found it super helpful to give 'bossy' kids an area of special responsibility and then teach them to be a 'good' boss- kind, thoughtful etc. And then when they are bossing...

Personally, I think they should be suing the government for weak-ass gun laws. It doesn't make that much sense to me to sue the manufacturers.

Either way, I hope the outcome brings some measure...
