I signed a contract (commitment letter in NYC) with a school that was ok, but when my ideal school called with an offer, I was stuck. I called principal #1 and told her the truth - that although her...

Hi,
I LOVED studying biography last year with my third graders. It was approached under the guise of a baseball theme unit. For the reading skills, I started with read alouds of famous baseball...

Pick up the Judy Clock. I also like the smaller ones that the children can work with on their own.

Not sure of authors, but

The "Julian" series (easy chapter books), "Jamaica", and "Grace" books are the only ones that come to mind.

Speaking of books

There is a book called "The Next Place" which is a breathtaking picture book, beautiful and very comforting. I bought a copy for my best friend a few years back when her brother passed away.

Subs are more important than teachers? Principals not busy? Either you work in a messed-up district, or haven't got a clue.

PS Sorry to all normal subs, who I greatly appreciate (but also leave...

I feel you!

I could have written your post about this time last year.
One of the things that was suggested to me was a game my class called "Where's the Proof?" I would put test-level passages on the overhead...

I went through this too!

My first year of teaching (not in the city), classes were split up on a daily basis with no regard to age group. How I was supposed to teach first graders to read with ten 6th graders in the back of...

Just wondering

WHERE did you hear that condoms are ineffective in preventing HIV? I have never heard this, and honestly don't believe it.

Happy Holidays!

This does not bother me in the least. As a Christian who celebrates Christmas, I find it an inclusive way to exchange kind thoughts with people who touch our lives in any way - whether they be...

Good Luck!

I've only had to do one demo, and I just want to assure you that it wasn't NEARLY as bad as I had imagined. First of all, the teacher will probably have a had a chance to prep the kids ("You have a...

Get something that hooks into the car!

I love my IPod! and use it mostly on the subway. But for extended car trips, I bought an adaptor which has been the worst EVER. It's the wireless kind that has to be tuned to a staticky radio...

I like these better!

This way I don't have time to stress and obsess over it. If she seemed happy, she probably is, and if she's anything like my principal, she'll probably write it up as a formal and stick it in your...

Not ridiculous!

Her new rule sounds a bit immature to me. I don't think it's right for her to try to control a social gathering this tightly. It's not like problems have occurred before and this is a last-ditch...

Not so hot on EM

Last year when I taught 3rd, the program worked for me because the children had developed a decent number sense. The spiraling curriculum was a plus because it was like a constant review. According...

Holes!

I think that Holes, by Louis Sachar (I'm pretty sure) was one of the best books I've ever read to my class. (I did it with an upper grade.) It also teaches great reading/thinking skills as there is...

Poems

Hi,
I am in first grade, and usually start this skill through poetry as a shared reading. First, I read the poem to the class while they follow along in their minds. Their focus this time is just...

Cigarette Smell (yuck!)

Hi,
I have a roomate who smokes in our apartment and I'm concerned about the smell. Especially because I may be becoming used to it, so I'm not aware of how foul it may be to visitors. Does anyone...

I'm game!

Hi,
I teach first grade in lower Manhattan. I have 26 children in the class. Many have never left the city and I think this would be a great activity for them. We'll definitely be your penpals, if...
