lockdown and fire drills

Last year we changed from two fire drills per month to one fire drill and one lockdown drill per month. Staff are not always told about the "reason" for the lockdown and we don't always evacuate the...

one recess per day

First graders have a 25 minute lunch followed by a 25 minute recess. There is one 42 minute PE period per 6 day cycle. We start at 8:30 and end at 3:30. We have "second lunch" which makes it a 3 1/2...

curriculum and pacing guides

There is no easy answer to this. With the spotlight on high stakes testing in the upper grade levels, it trickles down to those of us in the elementary grades. The guides and curriculum are the...

scholastic news

We use Scholastic News. It seems to supplement our social studies and science curriculums nicely. I've used some of the pieces to support non-fiction writing and reading. Some teachers have sent the...

Sorry for mis-reading your question! I knew you must have meant something else! Five days out of school and my brain is already mush! <!--giggle-->

I put them under the C

I would put them under the "comprehension" column. While it might involve being "accurate" and determining the meaning of new words "expanding vocabulary", the depth of thinking that is involved in...

back on Sept 4

We finished on June 14 - no snow days to make up this year - hooray. In-service days on 9/4, 9/5; students come for a full day on 9/6... that gives us a "two-day" week to start the year.
Enjoy your...

no real receipt

I was promised by a scholastic rep that a real "receipt" would be mailed to me to cover a large purchase (over $400). That was last May, I'm still waiting...luckily, I used my credit card statement...

checked out

I understand. We have six weeks left, but our first graders already feel they are "out of here" and on their way to second grade. Definitely need to "change things up" a little bit and re-energize.

I could have written the very same question. I have a new student (started 2 wks ago) who speaks Spanish and no English in a class of 22 (with 4 of the students having IEP's). The student is...

grammar

Just started using Linda Hoyt and Theresa Therriaut's Mastering the Mechanics. It seems to have good ideas for ways to integrate writing mechanics in the writers workshop format.

I've borrowed this idea from another first grade teacher.
After listening to the student of the week explain their favorite food, color, book, discuss pets, family members, etc. We write a book...

barometer student

I think I remember this from D-5:
I've asked a "barometer student" to model the "wrong" way to read and then have students offer ways to improve. The "model" then demonstrates all of the "correct"...

2-prong folders and crayons

Target had the folders for 15 cents also. I've tried to "go over the limit" at Staples and Office Max in the past by using my "teacher" card; it doesn't always work. Now I'm looking for the ones...
