Lots of variation...

Since this is managed at the state level... I'm certain there are lots of variations, even within the state. I'm in rural Maine and proud to share that my district (and those in this area) are:

One idea...

One suggestion I saw was to revive pen-paling and have the kids write letters to each other, a family member or maybe even the teacher. That might accomplish several things...

That would be me! LOL I was at school this morning (as a volunteer, not as a sub). Lots of kids were sniffing, sneezing, coughing--about the same as every year at this time. We're talking about (or...

Yep... personally, I view calling the office (or sending a kid there) as an admission of defeat, that, more often than not accomplishes little or nothing to improve the situation. In some cases, it...

Never say "never?"

While I totally agree with not blaming teachers... I'm not sure I can say I have never had an issue with a teacher. LOL I will say, however, that I've found teachers in general to be a great...

DramaSub and Nietzsche

Totally, agree... but I'm also not surprised by the negativity in this and other threads. I've been on this forum long enough to know that every so often the teacher/school bashing becomes the norm...

I will echo those who are suggesting that roving assignments are most likely a reflection of their confidence in you.

One suggestion: get one of those wheelie bags or a handled milkcrate with...

I use email... my general guideline is: What do I need to share to make the regular teacher's job easier the next day?

I tend to focus on learning, not behavior. If the students struggled with a...

Ima teacher

I couldn't agree more... I've seen teachers come in early, sick as a dog, to get materials and plans ready for the sub. I've had thoroughly written lesson plans go out the window when a school...

Comments are drifting a bit in the direction of what I see as a fundamental issue in schools and classrooms: individuality versus community. Personally, I'm a big believer in "shared management" of...

Interesting... we had a situation with foot, hand, and mouth disease and were told to use bleach--alcohol, etc. was ineffective on that particular virus. I guess there's some "it depends" and an...

Ambience?

Yes... generally specific to some teachers. All of our rooms have windows so "dark" is relative... and it does seem to have a calming influence. Some teachers have floor lamps with incandescent bulbs...

We're fortunate that we have an excellent school nurse... the office will occasionally handle minor boo-boos with bandaids and icepacks but they do NOT substitute for a qualified nurse. These can be...
