Remember that information and responses that you give them can't be as detailed. You have to censor what a lot of them want to know. It took me a little while to adjust.

Black flat sheets

I purchased black, flat sheets from Walmart. I take them down and wash them. They don't fade, and I use staples to attach them to my boards.

You could use ships, hot air balloons, and rockets as decorations. Maybe give them a travel log to keep key ideas from theme units that you teach. You could add maps as bulletin board backgrounds....

Use both by...

...keeping the inside of your room primarily groovy. Then decorate your outside door area in the school theme. I have done that before , and it worked just fine. It will save you a lot of money.
