The every other week is due to our district making a "priority plan" where we teach grammar and writing one week and spelling and writing another week. It's a nightmare, and in the past I just did...

How to grade spelling?
Out of 20 students, I have 1 that is on grade level. Half the class is 2 or more grade levels behind. In fact, I have at least 4 that read at a Kindergarten level (in 4th grade).
I am mandated to...

Sweeping reform
We really need to pull back on academics, especially at the primary level. Many (if not most) kids are NOT developmentally ready to learn to read at age 5. Their brains have not developed the...

We have no outside option, can’t distance
I’m in Alaska, so outside lunch is really not an option. Our cafeteria is small, so there is not way to distance.
What is planning time? We get zero planning time during the day. I’m in the...

Lunch in the classroom sucks.
I hate that we have to have lunch in the classroom. My kids eat in about 5 minutes, and then are obnoxious the rest of the time. I really hope we can go back to eating in the cafeteria next year.

I Second "Second Step"
We use Second Step school wide, and I really like it. The Day 1 lesson is the longest, but it only takes a few minutes on the other days.

She came in like a wrecking ball.
She came in and immediately started yelling at my kids - with me right there. They were working on a social studies project, so they were in small groups around the room. Two girls were working...

Books
This year I’m going to let each of them choose a book from the classroom library to take home and keep. Many of my students don’t have books at home, and they live to read.

Plans for reopening school in the fall?
