I Also Use It

I use it for students who request extra practice. I don't require it, but make it available to those who want to use it. It seems to work well and those who use it diligently make some...

I see it every once in a while...

I teach 6th grade math and I see it in about 1-2 kids in every class (@10 kids in 180). It's goofy, but I figure they missed the comprehension of it in elementary.

Honestly...

You have to do what is right for you. Keep in mind, very few jobs in America are 9-5. Even in this new job you will probably have to work extra hours, time to time, spend Sunday afternoons in the...

Number Game

I also do an activity very similar to trishg1. One little addition, is that I cover vocab right before the game. It involves matching since some students may not like to be put on the spot that...

When you say "go back"

does that mean review or teach old standards with your kids before you start the 6th grade ones?

If so, that could be normal (depending on how much time you spend on the 4th grade stuff). If...

A few years ago

I was in my first year of teaching and was working with a team that was extremely close knit. They pretty much said at our first planning meeting that "I don't need to do anything or come to the...

I Know Your Pain

I teach 6th and 7th grade math. I have many types of kids (and parents). In my community, Algebra in 7th grade is a status symbol. With that being said, I definitely have smart kids that need to...

Happy!

Some quick thoughts... can you meet with one of the other teachers for 30 minutes before school or during lunch/specials to see what they are teaching right now? Maybe one of them can help you out...

Great Tool for 6th Math

It might just be a 6th grade thing. My students love having it as a reference, and many create one on the back of their test. My first year I worried it was too juvenile, but they really use it and...

Fun Videos

I taught 7th grade math last year. On why math is important, I found 3-5 YouTube videos to help spark the group discussion. Some were tame like questions from Who wants to be a Millionaire and...

I almost made it through the whole year without saying a bad word. (I teach 6th grade). I was trying answer a question, but was trying to quiet down the class so that I could share wonderful math...

No

You are not overacting. This is school, not their home. I give the kids a break: to walk around, bathroom break, water and a snack. That takes about 10 minutes. Then it's work time. I'm not...

Funny, but true

I'm a second career teacher and I used to make $95,000 a year. The money was good, but I hated my job. I'd rather be with 25 great kids teaching them new things then in a 2 hour staff meeting with...

If the regular teacher is gone for more than 2 weeks, you need to do what works for you. This is your class, for this time period, and these students are your responsibility. You are teaching them,...

For example gaining and losing yards in football. The kids could put together a broadcast or article based on the game. You could also do that with stocks, weather, etc.
