There's a chance I may be switching to 4th grade next year. I've taught 5th for 4 years, and before that, I taught 1st for 2. I absolutely loved 5th at first - the independence, the literature, their...

Classroom Library

If you had to guesstimate, how many books do you have in your classroom library?
1,577. I'm using Classroom Booksource for the kids to check books out this year, so that's a current count. That...

No

I really don't like reading logs. I think they're largely useless, because avid readers find them tedious and those who don't read as much will probably grow to dislike it even more because of them. ...

I have a long last name, but my kids can say it, and they could when I taught 1st, too.

Teach them how to say it, but then be gracious with them. I personally cannot roll my r's, so I probably...

Commute

For the past 3 years, I've commuted about 20 miles, which took 25-45 minutes - longer in the afternoon than morning.

I'm switching schools next year. I'll be commuting 1 mile! There aren't even...

Time off

Never. My DH sees how hard I work. He's of the view that I deserve the vacation. He's never resented it. We get enough flack from the public about our vacations; I couldn't deal with it at home too.

I read it out loud in 5th toward the end of the year. I definitely would not read it to 3rd graders, and probably not even 4th. I think it's better for the 5th-8th crowd. It's a very dense read with...
