Oh yeah, btw, I don't call mine "rules".

Teacher 15, that would be a great activity if we had our own classrooms, but this is a sub board. We are in a different room with different students everyday. :)

Ima Teahcer, I love your rule:...

babysitter vs teacher

While it's great to actually use our skills and get to "teach" lessons, sometimes as subs we just don't get to do it. I usually take something to read in case I'm putting in videos all day, I have...

He probably stopped by to show support

He knows these classes are a challenge (probably for the reg.teacher too). When a principal looks in on me and asks, how things are going, I always assume that it is to show the students that he/she...

why not make more maps for yourself?

I would talk with (or write to) the sub coordinator about your concerns. No need to make it anonymous. I've given my schools lots of changes in my schedule, they always work around it w/o issues.

Just so you know, my message was longer. I deleted most of it because I didn't want the wrong person reading it and getting me into trouble. :( I really try not to complain, but I have had a horrid...

Words of wisdom, kinderPA!

kinderPA, what excellent advice. You inspire me to deal with bad days in a more positive way. Thanks!

terese591, sounds like a nightmare. You have to turn it around. Figure out what positives...

treat disrepect with serious action!

I've had students test me by making fun of my name. Once I made fun of his name (not anything inappropriate) right back and that shut him up. Another time I shot out a stern look and another...

business cards

I received 250 business cards from vistaprint.com for just under $6.00 shipping and handling. They have a bunch of designs to choose from. Mine are purple (favorite color) with a cool star on one...

I don't think I'd get paid

Just yesterday the secretary called me, at the last minute, to sub. I was hurrying to get ready knowing I would be late otherwise. About ten minutes later she called back and cancelled the job. I...

Be flexible

You are only there for the day. Subbing is a great excercise in figuring things out on the spur of the moment. It's nothing like having your own classroom, so quit trying to make it that. We don't...

I had an awesome day in a 2nd grade yesterday

There must have been something in the air yesterday. :) Everything went great for me too. I subbed for a 2nd grade class. The teacher plans were not something a first time sub could have followed,...

student who said "da**"

Maybe it was a little harsh for the school to send him home. On the other hand, maybe he will be more careful not to just let the words fly. Hopefully someone will teach him better words to use...

How do you address unpleasant words?

I'm never sure what I can do about students saying words that bother me. The swear words are an obvious problem with an obvious solution that the school will back me on. I don't know if I'm being...

2wk sub job

Don't feel bad about not getting asked to do the 2 week job. I actually get requested by teachers, yet I never seem to get those long term stints either. :( You can't take it personally. Who...

I love it! I never know when I'll be out just running errands or doing something with my kids and I get an unexpected hug from a little someone who looks familiar. :D It makes me feel like a movie...

Yes, I have done that.

In my main district we get paid $45/half day, and $70.00/full day. If I work two half-day assignments on the same day then they pay me $70.00 instead of $90.00. It would be great to get the extra...

I like the sound of this school

It sounds to me like this school has some good ideas for problematic behavior management. Sure, it's sad if this kid needs to be put in a special classroom, but thank God they HAVE a classroom like...

Aesop

I've never had the opportunity to snag a job from AESOP. My district is so small that the secretary usually hand enters the info. after verbally asking the sub if he/she is available.

During...

they still need to be taught

When they are lined up, before going into the hallway, have them stuff their mouths with "magic marshmellows"! These marshmellows, which of course are invisible and pretend, can fill their cheeks...

I want to know too!

I knew about a position in my area, talked with the principal, and expressed my interest. I truly thought I'd get a chance to interview for it. Well... I heard nothing until I read a "letter to...

An ID # ?

Some Aesop systems assign ID #'s for subs that you can give to teachers to be requested more efficiently. My school doesn't use them, but mine is very small. I would imagine urban districts might...

Yes, mine requires feedback from me

My AESOP system lists jobs on the front page under the heading "Assignments requiring feedback" until I give that feedback. I always just take care of it when I get home to clear out the screen. :) ...

Superstars

Mrs. T., those sound like great rewards for a classroom teacher to use, but a sub only gets them for one day. We need quick easy games and prizes. But thanks for putting in your two cents anyway. ...
