Here are a few I've done

For 3D shapes, spend some time exploring. Students record the number of faces, edges, and corners. Point out non-defining attributes (it is a cube because it's blue, or small? No! It's a cube because...

Informational Author Study?

Hi,

I'm looking to plan some author studies (for reading, though it could certainly connect to writing). There are a ton of great fiction writers, but I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions for...

I agree with ily on holding off just a bit. There's SO much to cover in terms of routines and classroom systems at first, and that first bit of school is often a "honeymoon" period anyway when...

I completely understand your concern, mrsbono. It was actually Lucy herself that suggested this when she spoke!! Certainly not as a constant, however. But it sends the message that in order to become...

I was extremely fortunate to see Lucy Calkins speak this fall, and have spent a lot of the year reading more of her books. She said that first graders in the middle of the year can and should write a...

I have recess duty!

All of the teachers are required to be with their class at recess, so I am always there to enforce the walking around the perimeter. I've had very few students in a few years of using this...

Lose recess choice

Kids have one warning and after that they lose recess in 5 minute increments. However, at my school we very rarely take away a student's recess--instead we take away their choice. That essentially...

Journals

A few weeks ago I started using journals, thought right now we're starting them totally together so they learn the expectations. But I'm imagining that in a few more weeks I can put up a prompt and...

Few ideas

I've started in the past by introducing an "Elements of fables" poster...then I read aloud a fable and we try to identify which elements it has (Talking animals, teaches a lesson, good vs. bad...

I agree with Daily 5 comments!

I started it this year and I HAVE LOVED IT. I'm introducing it really slowly and I'm totally ok with it. Even if they're not fully independent for longer stretches until late fall or early winter,...

Read aloud?

Last year parents were allowed to come in and listen to students read. The parent would listen to several, and it was motivating for all of the kids because they're happy to read to anyone, in...

Brain breaks!

I've been doing a bunch of brain breaks this year. My kids LOVE them (and I do too!). Some of my favorites came from googling "Responsive classroom energizers." We've been really into the robot...

I have tables too

My whole school uses tables, and often times I wish we had desks, but tables do make a lot of work convenient.

I keep some things in baskets. For instance, all of their writing folders are in a...

Christmas Tree Shop

Do you have a Christmas Tree Shop near you? I've found neat little chairs and a child's stool there on clearance. I also have bought some pillows there. This time of year they start to have clearance...

Some pressure...

To be honest, yes, I did feel some pressure about their reading levels (as is, "You expect me to teach all of them to read?!?"), but I also felt that way in 3rd grade, only when they come to you in...
