One of the best professional books out there...we did a 'voluntary'(union issues) book club with this book that was extremely useful...facilitated by our principal, we had to read a chapter, practice...

I also do the board games listed above, but before that, my class creates Geotowns to review the year's geometry unit...

google, "Geotown" or Geometric Town, to get info. Great project to take...

That is the message I am pulling out: it's great for lower performers, but not quite for at or above level readers.

Maniac Magee is perfect for social issues

My class of mixed race (and that includes several who are mixed race themselves) students loved this read aloud.

The main social issue is race relations--in a narrative way that perks my kids'...

We just had a big minute to win it afternoon...everyone seemed to love it...involve gym teacher...we had a hula hoop contest, the cookie slide down the face game, basketball layups, etc.

Poetry Read Alouds or Fun Readers Theatre

Get a bunch of Prelutsky, Silverstein, and Lansky poetry books...have them rehearse and perform.

Or find a fun reader's theatre...with no questions to go with it!! Ha. Just for the fun and fluency...

big class...break into groups of 5 or so...have them do own rankings then have the groups compare/debate their rankings...

little resources? 9th grade, they should be able to come up with 6-8...

I put two 'boring' words on either end of a spectrum ( 'bad' on one end and 'horrific' on the other end for instance)...I then have the students use online or book resources to find 8-10 synonyms for...

Rev up your Grammar

Verbs: tape cards under chairs before kids arrive..each card has a verb written on it...randomly call kids and they have to act out the verb.
Charades of course always get the kids into it..
