I think
About the Authors first. It gives you a format for writing instruction. Wondrous Words is for how to use mentor texts to teach writing. Both are fabulous.

I wonder...
if the next time they can choose their own topic, if the engagement would be better?
Two ideas:
1. Share a mentor text or have a student share a How to text at the beginning of writers' workshop....

Ezra Jack Keats or Mo Willems
would be fabulous for First Grade. There are lots of books for both. Kids will notice styles quickly.

mentor texts
Have you tried reading them mentor texts like How to Lose Your Friends by Nancy Carlson? I like to have the class read my book on How to Make Ants on a Log and then follow the directions. Good luck!

After a vacation, for example,
we talk about how we had a whole watermelon of stories happen. Then, we "crack open" the melon, and think of all of the seeds inside. The challenge for us, as writers, is to focus on one seed, one...

How about

Everyday!
As much as you can read aloud and model your thinking, the more you will teach your students how to do so.

I don't know
what Lucy says. Since we raise caterpillars early in the year, due to our four seasoned weather, I do nonfiction early. When my students write about insects, I give them some choices of lined...

From a second grade teacher...
I'm not sure what a literary essay is, but the idea of mentor texts is pretty basic. Find books, preferably shorter story books, that demonstrate what you want kids to write. First, study the text...
