Get a lawyer

I second that you should get a lawyer. If you are a member of a National teachers union like NEA, one should be provided for you, even if you are in a right to work state. You have extenuating...

Embarc has some resources. Most are the same materials but they do have topic quizzes for most of the topics within the modules. They may have some other materials.

Class Size

We have 80 second graders split between 5 teachers-16 per class.

We have 2 paras. I usually have a para about 2 hours daily. If she is not pulled to cover a class or some other duty.

Old Nightmare

Back when I taught 4/5, I had a nightmare at the start of each year where I went to set up my room but when I got there my students were already there waiting. The room was packed with all of the...

I have them at my kidney table, at student computers, and at other centers. My kids will grab them for peer tutoring or small groups anywhere around the room. When I got them I had one piece desks...

I have these, but my room is carpeted. They are very lightweight, and I don't think they would be a problem on tile. They weren't scooted so much as lifted and moved. I take one in the hall for...

I always do

I always do, and my students usually comment on it. They enjoy knowing when my birthday is, especially if theirs are near to mine. However, my birthday is in the middle of summer break so I don't...

I have afternoon car rider duty three days a week. I stay with my kids during recess, but that is not considered duty. It is considered being the teacher/supervisor of required physical activity.

Read Aloud

Frindle is a good third grade read-aloud. Students could read along with you or cd. They could then continue to use books for reference and discussion.

I haven't read the book, but I saw him speak last week, and the things he and his wife referenced from the book looked really good. They said they spent a very long time on it (several years) in...

Snow days

We have 8 snow days, which is actually less than any of the schools around here. Most districts have missed between 12 and 18, with some missing over 20. Last year we didn't miss any days.

You could look at it as empowering to you. I mean he's basically saying that whether he agrees or disagrees with you, you are the final authority on what happens in your classroom, and on something...

Look into Kate Waters. She has written several "day in the life" type books. One that comes to mind is Sarah Morton's Day: A Day In the Life of a Pilgrim Girl.

We get the same thing

The same thing happens here. Many of the kids won't put their coats on in the cold months, then once it warms up, they won't take them off. I think they run the heat and air at home so sparingly...

No problem

I see no problem with telling a guest appropriate guidelines for how to dress. People do that at gatherings all the time. Formal, casual, "church-appropriate", etc. She wrangled an invite, and you...

Our librarians are safe for now

Our state requires schools to employ a certified librarian with a degree in library and media technology. Smaller campuses(schools with under 250 I think) can share a librarian within a district. ...

We are getting a new school (combining 2 old schools) and right now they are racing the clock to get done in time. I expect they will have us in a week before the students. We did get to do a walk...
