My first switcheroo

Showed up yesterday for an art job. Was told it was only for the afternoon (of course, I can't get into the system to show them it was a whole day...I'd like to give benefit of the doubt, but I don't...

Before I started subbing...

I worked at a school where the Principal had goodie bags for all the guest teachers. You walked in the building and got a bag with a water bottle, mini candy bars, a banana and bag of microwave...

We love those!

I read all the Ramona books to her years ago, and I'm encouraging her to read them again on her own. I grew up in Portland (the home of Beverly Cleary) - and my sister used to live on Ramona Street...

Bullying parents

I had a parent go to the school board and superintendent (large, urban district) over the most asinine thing. (Won't put it here, because it would give me away.) At the end of the day, I got moved...

Grandparenting!

I love that analogy. As a mom of a toddler in the trenches, with no grandparents nearby, I often wonder what it would be like to do the "fun" stuff without all the responsibility. What a great...

I have done quite a bit of subbing at the school, and while not trained in EM, I am pretty familiar with it. I hear fractions are her weakest point. What manipulatives are particularly helpful to use?

keep 'em coming!

Thanks for all the suggestions so far.

She's done all of the Ramona books, flew through Magic Tree House, has done all of the Laura Ingalls (we even took a summer vacation and visited her homes.)...

Book Suggestions

I have a 3rd grade daughter who is quite advanced in her reading skills. We struggle finding good books for her to read that are a challenge, but appropriate for her age. She's still quite innocent...

Tutoring

I have been asked to tutor one of my piano students through the summer so she can catch up in math in before she starts 5th grade. I plan to talk to her teacher (already have mom's permission) to...

Why I Love It

In response to the "Scared Stiff" thread...I thought I'd post why I love subbing.

I taught for many years as a specialist. Almost a dozen schools in just about as many years (traveled between...

I was one...

I was once a specialist teacher. We usually had 2 kinds of subs...those who could keep control and do a "fluff" lesson (worksheets, videos, etc.) and those who could actually teach the content. We...

Take 2

Not sure where my previous response went. My original post states why I took a LOA. Not sure where I gave the impression that I've done long-term (weeks on end) assigments, or that I'm using sick...

Why LOA?

I think I said in my original post that we added to our family last year, and both of my children had major medical procedures this year.

I sub "regularly", meaning about 2 days a week right now....

I was specifically told that not only could I continue teaching for this district, I was allowed to work for other districts. As a sub or a full-time teacher. The only benefit I retained from LOA is...

Told I can't do a long-term

I'm currently on my second year's Leave of Absence. The first year, we added a new little one, and this year, both of my children needed major surgery. I've been subbing in the meantime.

So a good...

That Day's Work

I will score whatever the students have done that day, as long as it's cut and try (spelling tests, math, etc.) I don't assign grades, just a number correct. I would hope that helps the teacher a bit...
