This will really date me...

I loved Room 222. I was about ten when it first began broadcasting, but it made a huge impression on me. It was both funny and serious, and filled with social commentary from the early seventies....

FL Times Union publishes our VAM scores

Jacksoville's newsrag thinks they are doing the citizenry an important act of public service by publishing all NE FL teacher's VAM scores. Look up any teacher. See if he or she is any good. No...

Florida teachers...

can thank FL State Rep. Erik Fresen of Miami-Dade. This was his brainchild. I was so annoyed after reading about this (even though my 40-year-old ACT score would probably qualify if I could find it)...

'All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.'

Excellent article comparing the prosecution that occured in the Atlanta cheating scandal to that of the mortgage bankers responsible for the housing bubble.

SPED teachers...question on program design

Hi Teachers,

I am curious about how your elementary school/district, particularly in the upper grades, has designed special education programs for students with learning disabilities. In Florida,...

hate it, too. One of the worst PD's for me was a three-day workshop which was filled with nonsense. We started off writing down answers to inane questions, then making paper airplanes out of the...

Great idea, but

I'm in a portable. As I pointed out to our admin., if a maniac was trying to get into my room, he would simply bash in one of the four big windows. Nowhere to hide out there, and the thought is a...

Visible tattoos and body piercings look

"cheap" and unprofessional in my opinion. However, so do yoga pants, pj pants, sweat pants, and wrinkled, stained clothing on the job. I see very few teachers in my district who sport these looks at...

Glad to hear you are writing. Let us know when your novel comes out. I'd love to read it!

I see learning spurts and sputters every year. Most children appear to follow this pattern. They all take their turns. "On fire" for several months, followed by a cool down period. I have one...

<<I think this profession and education system itself gives teachers low self esteem and makes us feel inadequate. That we are never good enough. No respect. Just critique, critique. Apply pressure...

Jump off that high horse Gromit

Just out of curiosity, I searched PT by the terms "teachers are the only ones" to see how many posts came up as such. Didn't see any. So where is this coming from? Does your husband have multiple...

that's why a wheelchair-bound individual would not pursue employment as a fireman or a roofer. They would use their talents where they would benefit society best.

Some people

should not pursue a university education. Parents should help guide their children appropriately. Accommodations should be temporary with the short term goal of guiding children towards...

I think, Angelo...

that some people consider teaching almost a "part-time" job. They resent the fact that we aren't working within our four classroom walls 50 weeks a year and have no clue what our jobs entail. I have...

Do you teach science too?

I teach dependent, independent, and controlled variables in science early in the year, so by the time I teach graphing the students understand these ideas pretty well and are able to relate them.

It took a long time

to accept myself as an introvert. Most of the world thinks anyone who is quiet and prefers to think rather than talk an oddity. Eventually, I came to accept that as a teacher and a human being in...

I think about this too.

My conclusion is that certain students need to talk, to learn. I have some children who literally must talk their way through anything they do even to the point that if no one is near them, they are...
