Welcome to third grade. I've taught this level since I started teaching 12 years ago. I have no desire to change. Hope you have a successful year!

Yes for interactive notebooks

I used a very rough form of interactive notebook last year - really done on the fly. But I felt the students were working well in them and that they really promoted thinking about the text. We mostly...

Skills or strategies

If you are indeed referring to skills, then your state's standards would be where to find what you are expected to teach. You can search for Common Core State Standards online if your state has...

I have always started at the beginning of a year,...

I have always started at the beginning of a year, so I can't speak to the lessons. But I believe that as long as you are confident in your routines, you can introduce them at any time. Your first day...

PD What's that?

My district provides one district wide PD at the beginning of the school year - sometimes useful, sometimes not.
After that, it is usually provided by the district personnel themselves - never very...

There's an APP for that!

If you have an iPad, there is an APP I downloaded that has all of the standards and is very easy to read/use.

3rd grade teacher's thoughts

I haven't taught fourth. But I have taught third for 10 years. Be prepared for the immaturity. Coming out of second grade, they are still babies. And at least at my school, it seems they are still...

one more can't hurt!

Congratulations!!!
I have decided not to even start - so I am doubly happy for you! And a 4.0 no less. Great Job - buy yourself a treat (and it can't be for the classroom).

more on phonograms

The students learn that they have more than one sound by repeating the phonograms and their sounds on a regular basis. I made myself some extra large flashcards using old manilla file folders that I...

I Love Spalding

I took a Spalding course many years back. My own children's school use it in first grade. I love the spalding method. The problem is that the curriculum is very rigid and there really isn't a lot...

Spalding definitions

The homograph refers to the graphic part - the written words look the same, but the pronunciation and meaning are different (read/read, wind/wind)

Homonyms sound alike but have different meanings...

I need to try harder

from hovenweep's message: I was told once, at a meeting, by our superintendent, that "Any idiot can come off the street, teach the standards, and achieve 60% proficienty."

That's priceless. I...

I agree with everyone!

I also spend more time than most at the school. I have kicked myself about it often, and I am often told to quit working and go home. I finally figured out that I need to stay for myself!
I am...

just another chore

This definitely bites into the thought of reading for pleasure. How can we motivate students to read for pleasure if even a read aloud becomes a lesson. Reading to a student should provide a time...

May I suggest. . .

Sounds like a good time to pray. I hope I don't offend, but a big decision can be made a little easier when you pray about it. Even if you are not religious, find a church and just go sit. Let all...

Greatest Indulgence?

Keeping my OWN schedule. I get lots done, but I do what I want when I want. Also sleeping late (5:30 AM should NOT exist), reading, sewing, browsing.
And I LOVE having no papers to grade!!!!!!!!

maybe a clear vinyl cover?

What if you got all the background on and then covered the whole board with a clear vinyl. You can buy it by the yard at a fabric store. Then the kids can move their "people" and not bother the...

a reality I dislike

I teach third grade. We were told we could not give a grade for a "spelling" list. I am able to give a dictation test though. I create sentences using 2 or 3 of the week's spelling words in each...
