Creative writing assignment.

It's not anything out of the ordinary. I show them the pictures and they choose one to write a story about. The have to use the same title and incorporate the caption somewhere in the story. I have...

Can't remember if I used an activity!

I have a really fun writing activity using Chris Van Allsburg's book "The Mysteries of Harris Burdick". I usually save it for a week when we don't have regular ELA classes: conference weeks, etc....

How can that be?

If you are not the classroom teacher, you shouldn't be privy to the confidential information in an IEP meeting.

Meetings with an interpreter.

Oy. Have IEP meetings all day, and most of them are with non-English speaking parents.
It gives me a headache listening to the info given in two languages basically at the same time. Especially...

It's the end of the quarter.

Last day of the quarter today. In-service tomorrow, two whole days next week, 2 half days for conferences, another in-service day.
I'm going to end up re-teaching to the whole class anyway at this...

All I can do is laugh.

Just spent 45 minutes total teaching a lesson on summarizing. Made an anchor chart, modeled with a text using a document camera (I do). Gave out a text and walked through it with them (we do), and...

Interesting thoughts.

Hadn't thought of some of these things. Some of the questions are truly trick question which I think are just gotcha questions.
But I also think that part of the quiz is analysis, which would...

Student problem or teacher?

I have two children of my own in 10th grade right now. They have a English teacher that gives awful quizzes.
For example, the class average for one quiz was 35%. Another was 42%.
Not excusing...

Countless.

I don't even keep track.

But like GreyhoundGirl, I'll take the talking over screaming.
I have one that screams at the top of his lungs, then runs and hides behind a table.
I had another one...

I subbed before I was full-time.

I hated it. It's not easy at all. But I do resent when I spend a lot of time putting together plans, only to have the sub ignore them completely.
I make very detailed plans that are simple to...

That's what I'm going to do.

This is the first time I've had a problem.

Parent taught it wrong.

I taught a lesson on 2 digit x 2 digit mulitplication using the partial products area model yesterday. We had already learned. 1 digit x multi digit partial and regrouping.
I sent homework to...

Most of the time I agree.

I occasionally stay late to meet with a parent, but I've never had a parent demand it. And conferences are scheduled until 6pm.
On the other hand, my kids' school will NOT schedule conferences after...

It's all prepackaged.

Cooked and packaged at a central location, frozen, shipped to the school, reheated.
It's pretty awful. The kids MUST take the entree, milk, and fruit/veggie that is provided. We have a share...

Poor nutrition

Our school provides free breakfast and lunch. Yesterday a student came in with the provided breakfast: donut stick, chocolate milk, orange juice. Total grams of sugar: 78. That's more than 3 times...

He's already failing.

He doesn't do the work in class either. He showed up today at 10:45.
It's ridiculous they won't pull his exemption. Mom says if they won't allow the exemption, she'll just lie so he can...

Let him play with something.

I have my ADHD students sit at the back of the group with a fidget if they need it. I also don't required them to sit - they can stand or pace at the back of the room. I find that this actually cuts...

A "little"late.

Parent called this morning before school: student will be "a little late". 10:40 and still hasn't showed. Showed up at 10:20 yesterday. He has missed 60% of school days so far. District refuses to...

Not a problem.

I'm not sure why you aren't passing it. It's all pretty much common knowledge that any high school graduate should know.
I've never understood why people have such a difficult time!

Students don't get sent home for lice here.

The reason is is that it's not a public health issue. Unless the infestation is WAYYY out of control, it is not going to cause illness. You can't compare it with stomach flu, which can cause serious...

I work in an Elementary school

So the problem is more with the staff than students. (Though I do have a couple of students who like to wear cologne)
If I could pinpoint the person, I would go to them directly. But more often I...

It's not about how you smell.

It's about your hygiene choices causing a physical illness to coworkers or students. If you had bad BO, it would have to be addressed.
Fragrance allergies and sensitivites can be covered under the...

Fragrance free means just that!

I just sent out an email to my entire building. We are a fragrance-free school. We have several staff with severe sensitivities to fragrances, including me. Fragrances are a huge trigger for my...

Send it as homework

I don't believe in taking a child's recess away. I would either send the work home to be completed, or have the child complete the work instead of doing a fun class activity (not recess).

I don't take it personally.

For all the reasons msd2 put forth, and then some. Just like I tell my kids, sometimes people aren't going to like you, and it won't be any fault of yours.

You must separate the parent's behavior...
