Breakfast

That is shocking and completely immoral. And can't be helping with behaviour <!--grumpy-->

My school doesn't do meals at all, but when I worked at a school with a breakfast club it was peanut...

Bechmarks

Benchmarks are kinda silly. I care about the progress my students are making, not their raw scores. At the end of last year, I had one kid (in kindergarten) still reading at a level 1. And sure, that...

If it's yours and you want it, then of course you should take it. Admin created the problem, so admin needs to fix it. I actually think it will be a good visual reminder for them.

Saying no

I'm with you! I am soooo thankful for a boss that backs us teachers up. At our school we are most definitely allowed to say no, use consequences, and be firm when required. Now allowing children to...

Time off

Agreed! And for goodness sake, 5 weeks with subs is not gonna kill anyone. How ridiculous.

Sorry you're going through this.

Friends at work

My closest friends are definitely outside of work, but I am friendly with most of my co-workers and would count 3-4 of them as actual friends.

I did have one co-worker I was super close with but...

Hallways

I've never worked in a school that had hallways (schools aren't really built like that in Australia). But, when my class is walking past another room, we duck down and pretend to be 'ninjas' so we...

Cleaning

I have my kinders clean their desks at the end of each day using microfibre cloths and warm water. I use a non-toxic spray on days when we have painted or used a lot of glue, or if anyone is sick,...

Multiage

LOTS of rotational groups.

Many concepts can be introduced whole group, + then you can send kids off to rotating activities while you work in more depth with a particular grade level- or two.

Kinder

I've taught high school AND K, + they simply cannot be compared. You are right, they're different kinds of hard.

Of course people think K is easy, because when kindergarten classrooms are...

Esl

I have limited experience with ESL, but I have learned not to make early judgments about possible learning & behavior issues since these take a LOT longer to assess accurately when language barriers...

Home visit

Oh dear. It sounds like she cares about her kid, but those comments about police are a worry. I wonder if she's heard some story about police visiting a classroom and doesn't realise that it isn't a...

Yes! We're halfway through the year this year and I have 14. It's perfect! (Especially compared to my 29 kinders last year <!--eyebrow--> )

Movies

I've never really thought about the copyright, but movies are a rare treat in my class. Like, once or twice a year rare. I do, however, show clips from Alphablocks during our fruit break.

Um, that is unbelievable. Just as ridiculous as saying 'Oh, you don't work with kids? You'll never be a good parent then!'. <!--eyebrow-->

Introverted teachers

I find my students respond really well to a calm, quiet voice. I am naturally softly spoken, so I did have to work a bit on projecting, but I am not loud & I don't want to be.

Kids need to be...

Labels

I have hooks and they are labelled, however this is because my kiddos line up next to their bags each morning to come into class. They also keep lunch, fruito & drink bottles in their bags so they...

Snack

We have 'fruito' where each kid eats a piece of fruit during read-aloud. It doesn't really take extra time- we need to have read-alouds anyway!

Other than that, they eat outside during play time.

My schedule is similar to others on this thread, with an hour of recess each day and 30 mins of play each afternoon, except on Fridays when we have an hour. I should say that my school day is...

Tummy time

I often get my kids to lay on their tummies during circle time. An OT once told me tummy time is still really important for kids until they're at least 7.

Since then I've found that plenty of...

Inappropriate testing & goals

We get pressure like that sometimes. After a few bad experiences speaking my mind, I just smile and nod. And then keep on doing what I believe is best for my kinders.

What's the worst that can...

Feeling low

Your admin doesn't get it. You deserve more support. <!--crocus-->

State testing doesn't usually measure progress, and that's what is really important. Sorry you're feeling low.

'c' schools

I started out working at a "rough" school and loved it. Super brilliant, passionate teachers who were extremely supportive of each other. There were some severe behaviours but they were well managed,...
