Sometimes

I slam my hand on the podium. That gets their attention, then I say, " got them! Bunch of ants on my desk". They laugh but are then more attentive.

How come

..the two main times of the school year--the beginning and the end--that we need time to get set up or cleaned up, are the times when they schedule all the meetings and trainings?

Our kindergartners think

putting their names on the board is the worst thing ever. Use it sparingly. Maybe the group you describe is a little past that, I get on the paras to help split them up.

what the District/State SAYS it is. If they qualify they qualify. If they don't they don't. And I wouldn't worry about the student unless they are acing everything and are working way above grade...

I've noticed

sometimes you have a crappy day or two and there's no rhyme or reason why. I think all you can do is try not to internalize it or dwell on it. Of course this is easier said than done.

I've worked with some doozies over the years but this one sounds like a winner. Apply for a different grade level or something, but get away. She could mess up your career or your health.

I know a guy

who simply tears up any paper he gets with no name, as soon as the kid hands it to him. Pretty effective.
