I have an area where students can sit on the floor. Most classes love this, but I have had some classes that hated sitting on the floor, and they would rather sit at their desks.

Tickets

I give tickets for challenge words, and when the students earn enough tickets, they trade them in for a small prize.

I try to keep homework pretty standard from week to week...

Read 20 minutes each night.

Noise Level

The noise level also really bothers me when students are working with partners while I'm meeting with groups.

We focus on EEKK- They must be sitting elbows to elbows, knees to knees.

They also...

Assign seating

I would encourage you to assign the seats. You can ask the third grade teachers to look over your seating chart, or I like the idea of asking a specials class teacher.

I always had the students...

Morning Work

Like Yellowdaisies, I try to start math the second or third day of school, and I place a lot of emphasis on independent reading (choosing books, working on stamina, using elements of Daily 5...). I...

I didn't send the book home.

We generally completed the anthology reading in class. Sometimes I would send leveled readers home if students got behind. Otherwise, their reading homework was to read books of their choice at home....

Sample 1

I think Sample 1 sounds better. I like that you included your teacher of the year nomination. Should you include the ages/grade levels of the students with whom you worked?

Curriculum Maps

I would think that most schools have a curriculum map that briefly outlines what units need to be taught each month. If yours does not, try to meet with a colleague who can show you the "road map"...

Technology and Mentoring

You might ask what technology resources they have available for teachers and students.

Asking about a mentor program or professional development opportunities shows you are open to growth!

9 total

Ours is 7 sick days and 2 personal days. As for subs, the principal has a lengthy list, but if he gets through it and can't find one, he has other teachers fill in.

Symbol on Report Card

If a student has accommodations that affect more than half of their grade, we mark it on the report card by using a # next to their grade, and then list in the comment section what the accommodations...

Agree!

I agree with the two previous comments. I personally don't have many problems with Common Core. I feel that the people who are making the biggest fuss haven't really even looked at the standards. To...

We like My Math

We use My Math (McGraw Hill) and really like it because it is set up very well and is easy for the students to understand and is easy to teach. It also includes great technology components. However,...

Been There

It sounds like it probably is best for the principal to get involved since it involves students from multiple classrooms. In the meantime, I would try to personally speak with your student who is...

I agree with Song of Joy. It never hurts to apply and see what doors open, and then you and your husband can make a final decision. I understand about the pay and benefits. I taught in Christian...

Not quite sure, but I'd say either simile (a comparison using "like"), or personification (since the arm seems to have a mind of its own). I think I'd weigh more heavily on the personification side....

The school gives you sick days because everybody gets sick! Do not feel guilty for using them! Just try to give your principal enough notice for him/her to find a sub. (My principal requests that we...
