empty units

In my city there are so many empty luxury units (houses and condos), that some city officials have called for a "vacancy tax" like Vancouver, BC, has. NYC and LA have called for one as well.

Bluelining: piggybacking on expensive zip codes

I had not heard of the term until I read the article in The Atlantic. It is about the transfiguration of...neighborhoods with a deluge of investment aimed at a wealthier class.

It is about the...

community college

I agree 100% with Ruby tunes on her assessment of community colleges.
I think community college is a great place for those students who want to go into a trade, as well as for those who either need...

amiga, nobody is accusing you of making it up. I understand that you posted it in fun. I don't think you need to defend yourself by posting the long list of criteria that this kid Sam Stebbins has...

booking sites

I book directly with the hotel or through Hotels.com, depending on the situation. If it is a small hotel, it is usually better to book directly, as they work on a small profit margin and actually...

travel shoes

I do the same. They live in my suitcase, so when it is time to travel, they are already in there, wrapped in plastic bags. They are light weight. I use them in the hotel shower as well as walking...

income

I looked up average income, and they range from $59K to $200K. The ones I know are incorporated towns. The one closest to me has a much lower income than others on the list. That's why I'm wondering...

list

Interesting list, but somewhat subjective. Did they mention the criteria they used? I know four of these towns, and I am trying to find a common factor.

Vrbo

DH and I were in Rome last May and stayed 5 days in a VRBO. We stayed in the most awesome and very modern condo just east of the pyramid of Caius Cestius. The condo was ridiculously inexpensive (<US...

Lucky you! I love Ireland. Dublin is a lot of fun.

I second Cruxian on these places. The last time DH and I were in Dublin, we happened to catch the play Amadeus in Trinity College. It was a...

Juliet, your trip sounds wonderful! I haven't done the Yangtze cruise, but some friends have, and they loved it.

Oh, yes, you definitely need a jacket. I am the SoCal wimpy one who posted the snow picture from Seattle, and I can tell you IT WAS COLD! Even the locals were bundled up, which is saying something. ...

As a PP said, the parents may have dropped the ball. Most important dance class performances are scheduled as far as three months ahead. The 11-year old is a helpless bystander who is caught up in a...

I cannot imagine such a deepfreeze. I'm one of those wimpy SoCal people who think 65F is cold. It is 57F outside right now with an expected high of 59F, and I'm considering wearing my heavy parka....

It's interesting that your H does not (want to) understand how to mop. I hope he has learned from this incident. Sometimes husbands are thickheaded and don't want to hear...

babysitting

As PPs have said, every situation is different.

I suppose the one advantage of living 1500 miles away from my grandkids is that I don't get asked to babysit very often. Not that I wouldn't be...

Turmeric

I use about 3/4 of a teaspoon a day, and sprinkle it in a soup, a bowl of beans or lentils, in a curry, or in spaghetti sauce. I usually add some black pepper. Sometimes I add some to chai tea.
